For me the idea of having a complete remote and virtual office is great and I have done it for years now, but I can remember when I first started too. There are fears, real and imagined, that you will need to overcome and I am hoping that I can help you. This article will give you some pointers on how to start and what to focus on. 1. Focus On What You Want – When you hire someone to do a job it makes you focus on what it is that you really want to achieve. Make a list of items and prioritize them, once you find the item that is at the top of your list, detail it out and make it a project.
2. Cover the Extras – Think about all the small projects that you put on your ToDo list that never get done. Could you hire someone to check off one of those projects? What would this do for your overall performance?
3. Dip Your Toe – If you hire one person to work for you that is not in the office it will allow you to try out the idea and see if it is right for your business. Make sure that you do some research on how to be a good remote boss so that when you hire a remote person you are able to give them all that they need to be successful.
4. Get the Work Without the Hassle – Yes there are always hassles, but the nice thing about hiring a contractor that is remote is that you don’t have to rearrange the office, find a computer, get them a phone, etc… You are able to hire for the task at hand, get it done and either move on or set up the next project
5. It Won’t Kill You – I run into people all the time that ask me about someone stealing their idea if they hire them for a short term project. I can almost guarantee that no one will steal your idea, but cover your assets too. Sign NDAs and make sure that you have some type of recourse if something does happen, but most of the time workers, remote or not, just want the work they are not into creating their own company off of stolen ideas.
